My career journey at Metso: Learning, growing and making an impact

Meet Paula Peres, Director, Regional IT, with more than 30 years of experience of working for Metso. She’s had a remarkable career journey starting as an intern to leading all IT for Metso’s Americas, APAC and EMEA regions. She has also encouraged her team members to grow in the company. For her, success is not just about personal accomplishments; it’s about making a positive impact on others and helping them succeed along the way.

My Metso journey started in 1988 in Sorocaba, Brazil. My first position was an internship in the IT department, which paved the way for various interesting roles and responsibilities. Over the years, I grew from an IT system developer into a senior professional, responsible for leading the IT function across Metso’s regions Americas, APAC and EMEA.

During my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work with different people from whom I've learned a lot. I’ve also had a chance to work in different positions outside IT; as a Logistic Manager of the Distribution Center, Quality Manager of Minerals Area and Controller of Mining projects. Each step of the way has taught me something new.

The opportunities were not just handed to me. I think I’ve been in the driver’s seat of my career, and hard work, strong focus, commitment, learning new things by myself and also going the extra mile helped me reach new opportunities. Something that I always had in mind was being reliable with the promises I made during my journey. Keeping what you promise is the key to being recognized as a person that others can count on, not just in good times, but also during tough situations. It’s crucial to be willing to find solutions when things get challenging. I feel this behavior is what is expected at Metso and because of it, I was recognized by the company and offered new opportunities.

I can say that growth is an integral part of Metso’s culture. The company is open to identify talents and give opportunities for those who are interested in growing. The journey is of course not always without challenges. What has helped me along the way, is having good relationships with people, respect for others, responsibility and accountability.

Success is not a destination, but a continuous journey of growth and improvement. Let's embrace challenges and learn from failures. One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been giving my team the opportunity to grow with me. Success is not just about personal accomplishments, it’s also about making a positive impact on others and helping them to succeed along the way. I have always kept my eyes open for talents in my team who share the same customer focus and commitment to the company. I’m happy and proud to witness my former team members now in management positions and global roles.

The best part of my job is the people! Building and sustaining relationships with colleagues, partners and other stakeholders gives me the opportunity to achieve the results the company expects. Process and tools can be learned but without people's commitment nothing works, so having good relationships with all stakeholders is a must.

Metso values resonate well with me. Putting the customer in center and driving customer success is key to our business, but we will not achieve this without performing together, respecting each other and seeking for innovation. In IT, we exist to support the business. Therefore, customer satisfaction and success are essential for us.

I feel you can only enjoy your work to the fullest if you also have a good and balanced personal life. For me this means enjoying time with my kids, travelling, reading books and exercising. Those are the essentials in my life. My motto in life is: Be reliable and create a positive impact.

Finally, I’d like to close my post with a message to all the readers. Remember to respect others, always stay focused, be proactive and go the extra mile. Keep pushing yourself to learn and grow and never be afraid to take on new challenges!
