Metso Outotec launches pioneering recycling service for worn mill liners in Europe

Metso Outotec Corporation’s press release on October 21, 2022, at 09:00 a.m. EEST

As part of its extensive horizontal mill liner offering, Metso Outotec is introducing a recycling service for worn mill liners in Europe. The first-of-its-kind service aims to recycle and create value from used mill liners on an industrial scale. This new service is a part of the company’s Planet Positive offering focused on environmentally efficient technologies and services.

Worn liners are recyclable but must be disassembled before they can be reused or recycled. After over a decade of intensive development work and pilots for worn mill liner recycling, Metso Outotec is ready to introduce its latest circularity innovation, a unique separation line to process rubber, Poly-Met™ and Megaliner™ liners of all sizes. It enables the separation of different liner components so that they can be either reused or recycled in the most optimal way. For customers, the new mill liner recycling service solves the problem of disposing of worn-out mill liners and offers a way to reduce CO2 emissions and improve environmental efficiency, as less material is being sent to a landfill.

“Metso Outotec is a world leader in developing and manufacturing high-performance mill liners. We want to go a step further and ensure that the disposal of mill liners is easy for our customers and the used liners are efficiently recycled and reused for optimal circularity,” says Anssi Poutanen, Senior Vice President, Mill Lining business line at Metso Outotec.

“Metso Outotec wants to accelerate the circularity of all wear parts and materials. This new separation line is a crucial step on that path. We have already processed more than 200 liners with the new line. We are also exploring ways to increase the number of recycled materials in our liners to further close the circularity loop,” says Lars Furtenbach, RTD & Engineering Director, Mill lining business line at Metso Outotec.

In the first phase, the recycling service using the new separation line is available for mill lining service contract customers in Europe. The first partnership was recently announced with Boliden’s Kevitsa site in Finland. The recycling service will be expanded to new markets in 2023.
